Klaviyo for WhatsApp
Your Klaviyo preference page, in the WhatsApp chat
Customers manage their marketing preferences by just asking, and your flows reach them in the chat.
Follows up proactivelyWorks with your existing Klaviyo account.
- Customer: Can you tell me when the autumn blend is back?
- The agent uses Klaviyo: Show the customer's marketing preferences
- Agent: I can sign you up to our New drops list so you hear first. Want me to?
- Customer: Yes please
- The agent uses Klaviyo: Change the customer's marketing preferences
- Agent: Done! You're on New drops with jo@example.com, and I'll message you here too when there's news.
- A week later: Klaviyo tells the agent: Marketing received
- Agent: The autumn blend is back ๐ and there's 10% off this weekend with code AUTUMN10.
Signing up for new drops
The agent joins the customer to a list and follows the store's updates for them.
How Klaviyo works on WhatsApp
Connect Klaviyo and your Wassist agent can do what your Klaviyo preference page does, right in the conversation: tell customers what they're signed up to, add them to the lists you offer, and opt them in or out of email and SMS marketing. Every sign-up is marked as coming from the WhatsApp chat.
You can also add a Wassist step to any of your Klaviyo flows. When a customer who has opted in reaches it, your agent passes the step's message on to them, on WhatsApp or on your agent's MCP server, in its own words.
More conversations Klaviyo handles
- Customer: You're sending me too many emails
- The agent uses Klaviyo: Show the customer's marketing preferences
- Agent: Sorry about that! You're on New drops and the VIP club. I can take you off one, or stop marketing emails altogether.
- Customer: Just the VIP one
- The agent uses Klaviyo: Change the customer's marketing preferences
- Agent: Done, you're off the VIP club. You'll still hear about new drops.
Fewer emails, please
The agent takes the customer off one list and keeps the rest.
Why brands add Klaviyo to their WhatsApp agent
Sign-ups from the conversation
When a customer says "let me know about new drops", the agent adds them to the list you offer for it. Double opt-in lists still send Klaviyo's confirmation email.
Opting out is one message
"Stop emailing me" or "just take me off the VIP list" is handled straight away, without a trip to the preference page.
Your flows, in the chat
Add the Wassist step to any flow from the setup page. Customers who opted in through the chat get its message from your agent, and it stops as soon as they unsubscribe.
Only what you already offer
The agent can only offer the lists you tick, uses the customer's verified WhatsApp number and store login, and shows your SMS consent wording before any SMS opt-in.
What your agent can do with Klaviyo
You choose which of these your agent gets, agent by agent, after installing.
Show the customer's marketing preferences
What the customer is signed up to with the store: whether they get email and SMS marketing, and which of the store's lists they're on. Also lists what they can join (with each list_id), and the SMS consent wording if the store offers SMS. Only ever covers this customer, known by their WhatsApp number and store login.
Change the customer's marketing preferences
One change per call, only when the customer asks for it: - join_list: sign them up to one of the store's lists (list_id from get_my_preferences). - leave_list: take them off one list. They keep getting the store's other marketing. - opt_in: subscribe them to the store's email or SMS marketing in general. - opt_out: unsubscribe them from email, SMS or all marketing. Use it for "stop emailing me" and the like. Emails go to the customer's verified email (their store login, or the email the store already has for their WhatsApp number); only if there's none can you pass the email they give you, and only to join a list with double opt-in, where Klaviyo emails them to confirm. SMS always uses their WhatsApp number: first show them the store's SMS consent wording from get_my_preferences, word for word, and only once they say yes, call with sms_consent_confirmed true.
Updates Klaviyo can follow up on
When a customer asks to be kept posted, your agent watches for these and messages them when they happen. You choose which ones each agent gets.
Marketing received
One of the store's Klaviyo flows sent this customer an update to pass on in the chat, such as a new collection, an offer or a reminder. It follows the customer, not a topic: subscribe with no arguments once they have opted in to marketing (update_preferences tells you when). It only arrives while they're still subscribed to the store's email or SMS marketing, so opting out stops it too. On WhatsApp you can only message the customer within 24 hours of their last message; updates that arrive after that wait until they next write.
Klaviyo for WhatsApp: FAQs
Which lists can the agent sign customers up to?
Only the ones you tick on the setup page, which should be the lists on your Klaviyo preference page. You can name each one the way customers know it, and pick one for plain "sign me up" requests.
Which email address does the agent use?
The customer's verified email: the one from their store login, or the one you already have in Klaviyo for their WhatsApp number. If there's neither, the agent can only take an email typed in the chat to join a list with double opt-in, so Klaviyo emails them to confirm first.
How does SMS opt-in work?
Turn it on and add the consent wording from your SMS sign-up forms. The agent shows that wording and waits for the customer to agree before subscribing their WhatsApp number to SMS marketing.
How do my flows reach customers in the chat?
Click "Add WhatsApp / MCP step" next to a flow on the setup page. It adds a webhook step at the end of the flow as a draft. Write the message in Klaviyo, move the step where you want it and set it live. Customers who opted in through the chat get the message from your agent while they still accept your marketing. On WhatsApp, messages that arrive more than 24 hours after the customer last wrote wait until they next do.
What happens to the flow steps if I disconnect?
They stay in your flows, and their calls fail from then on. Delete them in Klaviyo before disconnecting.
