Recharge for WhatsApp
Subscription changes, handled in the WhatsApp chat
Customers skip, reschedule, resize and swap their Recharge subscriptions by just asking.
Follows up proactivelyWorks with your existing Recharge account.
- Customer: I've still got loads of coffee, can I skip my next one?
- The agent uses Recharge: List upcoming charges
- Agent: Your next delivery is 2 bags of House Blend on 3 November for £24. Want me to skip that one?
- Customer: Yes please
- The agent uses Recharge: Skip a delivery
- Agent: Done, the 3 November delivery is skipped and you won't be charged for it. Your next one is on 1 December.
Skipping a delivery
The agent finds the next delivery and skips it after the customer confirms.
How Recharge works on WhatsApp
Connect Recharge and your Wassist agent can see each logged-in customer's subscriptions, upcoming charges and recent orders, then make the everyday changes they ask for: skip a delivery, move the next one, change the quantity or frequency, or swap to another flavour or size.
The requests that usually end up as support tickets, or as cancellations when customers can't find the right button, get sorted in a quick conversation instead.
More conversations Recharge handles
- Customer: Can I switch to decaf, and get it every 6 weeks instead?
- The agent uses Recharge: List swap options
- The agent uses Recharge: List delivery frequency options
- Agent: Decaf is £13 a bag and in stock, and every 6 weeks is one of the options. Shall I make both changes?
- Customer: Go for it
- The agent uses Recharge: Swap subscription product
- The agent uses Recharge: Change quantity or frequency
- Agent: All set: you're now on Decaf, delivered every 6 weeks. Your next delivery is on 15 December.
Swapping and changing frequency
The agent swaps the customer to another option and moves them to a less frequent delivery.
- Customer: My card expired so I've just updated it. Can you let me know when my coffee payment goes through?
- Agent: Thanks for updating it! I'll message you here as soon as your House Blend payment goes through.
- 2 days later: Recharge tells the agent: Charge processed
- Agent: Good news: your £24 payment went through, so 2 bags of House Blend are on their way. Your next delivery after that is on 1 December.
Following up on a payment
After a failed payment, the agent tells the customer when the retry goes through.
Why brands add Recharge to their WhatsApp agent
Fewer "can I skip this month?" tickets
Skips, new dates, quantity and frequency changes happen in the chat, any time of day, without your team touching the Recharge admin.
A flexible option before a cancellation
Customers who are overstocked or away can skip or push back a delivery in seconds, instead of cancelling because it's easier.
Swaps without the hunt
Your agent lists the other flavours or sizes on subscription, with prices and stock, and swaps the one the customer picks.
Follow-ups without chasing
When a customer asks, your agent messages them once a payment goes through or fails, an order is placed, a charge is coming up, or your team has changed their subscription.
Only their own subscriptions
The agent only sees and changes subscriptions once the customer has logged in to their store account, and checks every change belongs to them.
What your agent can do with Recharge
You choose which of these your agent gets, agent by agent, after installing.
Change next charge date
Move a subscription's next charge (and delivery) to another date; later ones follow on from it at the usual frequency. This is also how to pause a subscription (move the date out, up to 12 months) and resume it (move the date back in). Confirm the new date with the customer first.
List delivery frequency options
How often a subscription can be delivered, from the store's subscription plans for that product. Use before update_subscription.
List recent subscription orders
The logged-in customer's recent subscription orders, newest first, with order number, date, total and items.
List subscriptions
The logged-in customer's active subscriptions: subscription_id, product, quantity, price, how often it's delivered and the next charge date. Works only once the customer has logged in to their store account.
List swap options
Other versions of the product a subscription can be swapped to (e.g. another flavour or size), with variant_id, price and stock. Use before swap_subscription.
List upcoming charges
The logged-in customer's next subscription charges, soonest first: charge_id, date, what's in it, total and where it ships. Includes charges they have skipped.
Skip a delivery
Skip an upcoming charge from list_upcoming_charges, so nothing is charged or sent that time; later deliveries carry on as normal. Confirm the date and items with the customer first. Skips every subscription in the charge unless you pass subscription_ids.
Swap subscription product
Swap a subscription to another version of the same product from list_swap_options (e.g. another flavour or size). Confirm the new option and its price with the customer first.
Undo a skipped delivery
Put back a delivery the customer skipped, from list_upcoming_charges, so it is charged and sent on its date again. Confirm with the customer first. Restores every subscription in the charge unless you pass subscription_ids.
Change quantity or frequency
Change a subscription's quantity or how often it's delivered. Frequencies must be one of list_frequency_options. Confirm the change with the customer first. Changing the frequency recalculates the next charge date and clears any skipped deliveries.
Updates Recharge can follow up on
When a customer asks to be kept posted, your agent watches for these and messages them when they happen. You choose which ones each agent gets.
Charge processed
One of the customer's subscription charges went through, or failed (for example a declined or expired card). Use it when a customer asks to hear once a payment goes through, such as after updating their card or putting a skipped delivery back. Only fires for the logged-in customer's own charges.
Charge upcoming
One of the customer's subscription charges is coming up in the next few days (how many is set by the store, usually 3). Use it when a customer wants a reminder before their next delivery is charged, so they can skip or change it. WhatsApp only lets you message them within 24 hours of their last message, so it's most useful when the charge is a day or two away. Only fires for the logged-in customer's own charges.
Order created
An order was placed for one of the customer's subscriptions, with its store order number. Use it when a customer asks to hear once their next delivery is ordered. Only fires for the logged-in customer's own orders.
Subscription changed
One of the customer's subscriptions was changed somewhere other than this chat: by the store's team, or by the customer in their account. Use it when the store's team is sorting something out and the customer wants to hear when it's done. Changes you make with this app's tools don't fire it. Only fires for the logged-in customer's own subscriptions.
Recharge for WhatsApp: FAQs
What does the Recharge app let my WhatsApp agent do?
It can show customers their active subscriptions, upcoming charges and recent orders, and can skip or restore a delivery, move the next charge date (which is also how it pauses a subscription), change the quantity or delivery frequency, and swap to another variant of the same product.
Can the agent cancel subscriptions?
No. When a customer wants to cancel, the agent points them to their account on your store, or to the subscription page you set on the app's setup page.
Do customers need to log in?
Yes. The agent only looks up subscriptions for customers who have logged in to their Shopify store account in the chat. It never looks anyone up by email, so nobody can see or change someone else's subscription.
Can I stop the agent from making changes?
Yes. After installing, you choose which tools each agent gets, so you can give it only the read tools. You can also leave write permissions off the Recharge API token.
Can the agent message customers when something changes?
Yes, when a customer asks it to. The agent can follow up when a charge is coming up, goes through or fails, when an order is placed, and when your team or the customer changes a subscription elsewhere. You choose which of these each agent can use. Messages are sent within WhatsApp's 24-hour window; anything after that waits until the customer next writes.
Which frequencies and swaps can customers choose?
The same ones your Recharge subscription plans offer. The agent only offers frequencies from those plans, and only swaps to variants that are available on subscription and allowed to be swapped in your customer portal settings.
